Galleries in Nice
I particularly wanted to visit the Musee International D’Art Naif Anatole Jakovsky in Nice. It’s a collection housed in a chateau and displays naive art from the 18th-21st Century.
I am drawn to naive art as it’s done by untrained artists outside the established art world and I love the way the artists don’t conform to the usual rules, they break the grammar.
The images of the boat, show a work by Jean Branciard called Le Tigre from 1998. Branciard collects found materials and puts them together hapazardly to form his sculptures. The materials used all have a history and were useful in a previous existence. He is not formally trained but has always drawn and painted. The boat makes me think of fragile memories or half remembered dreams, something intangible which is difficult to grasp hold of.
Three of my favourite images from the gallery, La petit danseuse (oil on wood) by Camille Bombois, Le Marin (oil on canvas) by Manfred Sohl and Les Tres Marines (oil on canvas).
FAMM (Female Artists of the Mougins Museum)
Getting a train from Nice to Cannes and then a bus to the village of Mougins we visited Famm, on 9th March 2026, a museum celebrating women artists. The museum is over four floors and is an exhibition of paintings, sculptures and photographs. These were some of the artworks that I enjoyed the most.
